George Hockenyos papers
Content Description
The bulk of the collection relates to George Hockenyos' grocery business in Portland, Oregon. Included are ephemera such as a receipt pad and business cards, a cash book, a book listing customers and references, a letter dating after Hockenyos' death authorizing his son to collect debts owed to the store, and photographs of both the store's exterior and interior. The collection also includes several issues of grocer trade journals, as well as souvenir programs for grocers' conventions, the constitution and bylaws for the Retail Grocers and Merchants Association, and ephemera from grocers' association events. Additional items include portrait photographs (presumably of Hockenyos family members), a photograph of the carpentry firm Hockenyos Bros. during the Flood of 1894, and materials relating to Henry Hockenyos' service in the Oregon National Guard, including that during the Spanish-American War and World War I.

Biographical
George Hockenyos was born in 1864. Beginning in 1888, he worked with his older brother Henry at the carpentry firm Kelton & Hockenyos in Portland, Oregon; it appears from Portland city directories that the firm was known as Hockenyos Bros. from 1894 through 1897. George Hockenyos left the carpentry business and opened a grocery store at 138 Russell Street (later NE Russell) in 1902. He managed the store until his sudden death in May 1917. George and his wife, Mary, had two children, Marie and George Francis.
In addition to his work as a carpenter, Henry Hockenyos (1861-1935) served in the Oregon National Guard as a drummer, and was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and World War I.
