Scrapbook, 1 volume, 1867-1946, contains biographical sketches, newspaper clippings, etc., regarding the Laidlaw family in England and Scotland; James Laidlaw's career as consul; his involvement in the movement to end shanghaiing; and his dispute with Gideon Joubert, a former officer in the Boer army and lecturer in Portland, Oregon.

Biographical note

James Laidlaw, British consul, was born January 23, 1847, in Scotland. Arriving in America in 1871, Laidlaw was appointed in 1873 to the British Consulate for the district of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska. Founder and president of the British Benevolent Society, he was heavily involved in charity work throughout his life. Married twice, to Louise Carpenter, who died 1886, and Charlotte Coad Stout, he had seven children. He died on January 5, 1913.

James Laidlaw (1847-1913) was born in Scotland.
