Biographical note

Born in 1818, Ben Simpson was an early Oregon pioneer who settled in French Prairie, Marion County, in 1847. He served as an Indian agent, postal inspector, and surveyor, as well as a state legislator from four different Oregon districts. In addition, he built and operated steamboats, ran a sawmill, and was a volunteer Baptist preacher. His first wife was Eliza Jane Wisdom, with whom he had one son, John T. Simpson. His second wife was Nancy Cooper, whom he married in 1843 and with whom he had 10 children.
