Scope and Contents

The collection consists of materials relating to Portland, Oregon, lawyer Lida M. O'Bryon and her family. Materials were either collected or created by O'Bryon's friend Mae Sutherland McCann. Contents include: Biographical information about Lida O'Bryon and her relatives, likely written by McCann; genealogical information about the O'Bryon family; newspaper clippings about O'Bryon; a notice for the funeral of O'Bryon's sister Mary Jane Sibley; cards for elections that O'Bryon ran in; and photographs of O'Bryon and her family, including tintypes and cartes de visite that appear to have been removed from an album.

Mae Sutherland McCann (1886-1983) was a friend of Lida M. O'Bryon.

Biographical Note

Lida M. O'Bryon was born in 1876 in Elmira, New York. She attended Syracuse University in New York and the Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C. She was admitted to the Oregon Bar in 1904, making her one of the first women lawyers to practice in Oregon. She then established a practice with her brother George O'Bryon in Portland, Oregon. In 1918, she was appointed deputy district attorney for Multnomah County, a post she held until 1931, when she returned to private practice. O'Bryon ran for political and judicial office on several occasions, including for district judge in 1914 and for state representative in 1942. O'Bryon died in 1966 in Salem, Oregon.

Abstract

Photographs, newspaper clippings, election cards, and biographical and genealogical information relating to Lida M. O'Bryon (1876-1966) and her family, gathered by Mae Sutherland McCann (1886-1983). Lida M. O'Bryon was one of the first women lawyers to practice in Portland, Oregon, and served as a deputy district attorney. McCann was a friend of O'Bryon's.
