Scope and Contents

The collection consists of two wills of Amanda W. Reed, including two codicils to one of the wills. The first will, dated September 22, 1894, is handwritten. The second will, dated November 12, 1897, is typed, and has two typed codicils, dated August 16, 1899, and October 25, 1899, respectively. The 1897 will includes a stipulation of funds to be used to found a "Reed Institute." All documents include signatures by Reed and witnesses.

Biographical Note

Amanda Wood Reed was born in 1832 in Quincy, Massachusetts. In 1850, she married Simeon Gannett Reed (1830-1895); the couple came to Portland, Oregon, in 1852, and Simeon G. Reed established himself as a businessman. The couple were also active in the First Unitarian Church of Portland. In 1892, they moved to Pasadena, California, though Amanda W. Reed continued to come to Portland for summers. Reed died in May 1904; in her will, she included funds to be used to found an educational institute in Portland named after husband, which became Reed College. Both Reed and her husband are buried at Riverview Cemetery in Portland.

Abstract

Wills of Amanda W. Reed (1832-1904) from 1894 and 1897, with codicils to the 1897 will dated 1899. Reed was the wife of Portland, Oregon businessman Simeon G. Reed (1830-1895). Her will included funds that established what would become Reed College in Portland.
