The collection consists of the annual report for Public School No. 1 of Multnomah County (also known as Central School) for the school year of 1858-1859. The report lists the average attendance, and the names of teachers. It also notes that the school used textbooks that an 1858 board meeting had prescribed.

Administrative History

Public School No. 1 of Multnomah County, also known as Central School, was established in May 1858 in Portland, Oregon Territory, two years following the closure of Sylvester Pennoyer's school. L. L. Terwilliger was the school's first principal. The school building was sold in 1883, and the school closed in 1885. The site where it had been located became the Portland Hotel, and later, Pioneer Courthouse Square.
