Scope and Contents

The collection contains a transcript of a counselor's report that Camille Somerville, a matron for women workers at the Kaiser Shipyards, wrote on June 7, 1943. In the report, Somerville describes her interactions with both men and women workers at the Kaiser Shipyards, lists requests that workers have made, and details her acts to help increase worker productivity. The collection also includes a photograph of Somerville in uniform, and a photograph of the matron's badge she wore.

Biographical Note

Camille Somerville was born in 1901 to a Métis family near Winnipeg, Canada. Around 1930, she came to Portland, Oregon, with her husband, Lewis Somerville (1890-1971) and their three children. During World War II, she worked as a matron for women workers at the Kaiser Shipyards. She died in 1967.

Also includes a photograph of Somerville in uniform and a photograph of the badge she wore.
