Scope and Contents

Tape 3, Side 1, through Tape 5, Side 1. In the second interview session, conducted on February 18, 1993, Ashbaugh continues to talk about his early life in Heppner, and about his experiences recovering from polio and scarlet fever. He discusses jobs he worked after moving to Portland during World War II, including working for an insurance company. He speaks further about his involvement with Retail Clerks Local 1257 while working at a clothing store in Portland. He speaks extensively about his experiences and accomplishments as president of Local 1257, including participating in collective bargaining, investigating sexual harassment complaints, and dealing with companies such as Montgomery Ward, Fred Meyer, and Nordstrom. He also talks about his friendship with John F. Kennedy. He discusses the reasons why several locals, including Local 1257, merged to become United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555, and talks about his role in the creation of a credit union for union members.
