Tape 2, Side 2, through Tape 3, Side 2. In the second interview session, conducted on September 8, 1999, Rohlf continues to discuss his efforts to gain Endangered Species Act protection for salmon. He talks about the politics surrounding conservation of salmon in the Pacific Northwest, and about the “Salmon Summit” arranged by Mark Hatfield in 1991, which was meant to find local solutions to salmon issues. He discusses proposals for drawdowns on dams on the Columbia River; the conflict between the terms of treaties with Native peoples and the effects of the dams on the river and fish populations; and the results of the National Marine Fisheries Service biological opinion issued in 1993.
