Scope and Contents
Tape 1, Side 1, through Tape 2, Side 1. In the first interview session, conducted on August 9, 1999, Rohlf discusses his family background and early life in Denver, Colorado, including his early interest in environmental issues. He shares his reasons for pursuing a career as an environmental lawyer, and describes how he became a law professor at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. He discusses working on his 1989 book, “The Endangered Species Act: A Guide to Its Protections and Implementation,” and talks about his efforts to get salmon listed as endangered. He speaks extensively about why he believes salmon need the protections of the Endangered Species Act, and addresses objections to the listing.
