Scope and Contents

In this interview, conducted by Linda S. Dodds and Patricia Keith on July 1, 1980, Rex L. West (born 1911) discusses his involvement with the Longview Ski Club beginning in 1936. He talks about the construction of the club’s cabin on Mount St. Helens, about skiing on the mountain year round, and about the mountain’s winter landscape. He speaks extensively about parties thrown by the ski club, and about the club’s association with Harry Truman. He discusses his experiences fishing on Spirit Lake. He also talks about the legend of the “Hair Apes,” cryptids rumored to have lived near the lake. He closes the interview by discussing the future of the Longview Ski Club in the wake of the 1980 eruption.
