Scope and Contents
In this 8-page typewritten account, Thomas Vaughan (1924-2013), director of the Oregon Historical Society from 1954-1989, describes his memories of seeing Mount St. Helens for the first time after moving to the Cowlitz Valley in Washington as a child in the 1930s. He writes about his experiences on the mountain and at Spirit Lake during his childhood and teenage years, and later as an adult after he returned to the Pacific Northwest in the 1950s.
