Scope and Contents

Tape 8. In the seventh interview session, conducted on May 28, 2014, Edwards continues to discuss his work as business manager of Local 48. He speaks about the Electrical Workers Minority Caucus within Local 48, which he cofounded in 1974 as the Sam G. Whitney Association, named for the first Black journeyman electrician in the local. He also talks about his service as a union steward and as a member of the executive council of Local 48. He discusses the volunteer work needed to keep the union running, talks about the importance of attending general membership meetings, and describes how public perception of labor unions changed during the 1980s. He discusses the need to promote young people to positions of leadership in unions.
