Photographs of ballet performers, with inscriptions to Schumacher, circa 1939
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of papers, photographs, and video recordings relating to the career of ballet performer and teacher Jacqueline Schumacher of Portland, Oregon. The photographs, photograph album, and scrapbooks document Schumacher's time as a performer for the San Francisco Opera Ballet in the late 1930s and early 1940s, and her career as a teacher and choreographer in Portland from the 1950s through the early 1980s. Video recordings in the collection consist of a news program that includes a segment about the Portland Ballet Company; a performance by the Portland Ballet Company; and greeting to Schumacher from her teacher, William F. Christensen, recorded for a 1997 tribute to Schumacher. Other materials in the collection include personal and family photographs; correspondence; souvenir books with images, correspondence, and ephemera produced for the 1997 tribute event and for Schumacher's 95th birthday; clippings; posters for the San Francisco Opera Ballet; issues of magazines mentioning Schumacher or Portland ballet; and two sketchbooks of costume designs, drawn by an unidentified person. The collection also includes digitized versions of many of the collection's contents, as well as two Microsoft Word files for biographical notes about Schumacher, written by Blaine Covert and Carol Shults.
