Scanfair correspondence, 1984-1985
Scope and Contents
This series consists of materials from and about events relating to the Scandinavian American community in Oregon, usually in the Portland metropolitan region. These include annual Midsummer (also written as Midsommar) festivals in Portland and Astoria; the Christmas season Lucia Festival of Lights in Portland; films, dance performances, and musical performances; banquets and awards honoring selected Scandinavian Americans; exhibitions; and fundraising events, including Scanfest and Scanfair, cultural events that began as a means to support Scandinavian language and history courses at Portland State University. The series also includes records relating to Folkfest of Portland, a multicultural fair that Scandinavian American organizations took part in; and the New Sweden Jubilee, a series of events and exhibitions in multiple cities in the U.S., including Portland, to mark the 350th anniversary of the establishment of the first Swedish colony in North America.
