Biographical note

John Whitmore Storrs was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1920. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Dartmouth College, then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1949, he earned a master’s degree in architecture from Yale University in Hartford, Connecticut, then moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1950. He worked in the Northwest Regional Style, and his designs often included wood as a central feature. Buildings designed by Storrs include the Portland Garden Club, Salishan Lodge, Catlin Gabel School, the World Forestry Center, Sokol Blosser Winery, and Lakeridge High School. Storrs married twice and had four children. He died in 2003.
