Hammond, Herb, 1945-
Biographical note
Herbert Leon “Herb” Hammond III was born in Medford, Oregon, in 1945, and grew up in Corvallis, Oregon. In 1967, he earned a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree in forestry at the Oregon State University. The same year, he and Susan Leslie Amen were married. During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1973, he emigrated to British Columbia, Canada, to work for the pulp and paper company Crown Zellerbach. From 1974 to 1982, he taught ecology and silviculture at Selkirk College in Castlegar, B.C. In 1976, he founded Silva Ecosystem Consultants Ltd., and in 1992, the Hammonds founded the Silva Forest Foundation. Through these organizations, Hammond worked with Canadian communities to develop conservation plansuntil 2020, when the foundation ceased operations. The Hammonds also authored several books on forest ecology.

Oral history interview with Herb Hammond
Oral history interview with Herb Hammond, conducted by Clark Hansen on September 25, 2000, as part of the Columbia River Dissenters Oral History Series. Hammond discusses his work through two organizations he founded, Silva Ecosystem Consultants Ltd. and the Silva Forest Foundation, to help communities develop ecology-based conservation plans. He talks about the importance of salmon to Pacific Northwest ecosystems, and shares ideas for conservation and restoration of fish runs.
