Biographical note

Peter Andrew Huhtala was born in Astoria, Oregon, in 1952. He attended Clatsop College. During the 1980s, he lived in Laguna Beach and Los Osos, California, and worked as a carpenter and musican. He returned to Oregon in 1988. He served as policy director of the Pacific Marine Conservation Council, and was director of the Oregon Coastal Zone Management Association. From 2011 to 2015, he served on the Clatsop County Board of Commissioners, and in 2024, he was elected to the Washington County Board of Commissioners.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Peter A. Huhtala, conducted by Clark Hansen on March 28, 2000, as part of the Columbia River Dissenters Oral History Series. Huhtala discusses the history of the fish canning industry in Astoria, Oregon, and his involvement with the Columbia Deepening Opposition Group (CDOG), which opposed proposals to deepen the Columbia River and the Willamette River.
