Biography

Frank Anthony Bauman Jr. was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1921. He grew up in Northeast Portland and attended Grant High School and later Stanford University (1939-1942). During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy's Japanese language intelligence program and visited Hiroshima with U.S. forces directly after the war. From 1946 to 1949, he attended law school at Yale University, specializing in international law. He returned to Oregon in 1949 and practiced law with a number of Portland firms, including Veatch, Bauman & Veatch and Keane, Haessler, Bauman & Harper. He married Mildred Packer in 1950, then studied international law at the University of London. From 1971 to 1976, Bauman was the U.N. Senior Officer to Australasia. He was active in the World Affairs Council and served with the Aspen Institute in Japan. He died in 2015.
