Biography
Wesley Granberg-Michaelson, nee Wesley Michaelson, was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1945. Through his involvement with the Young Republicans, he met Oregon Governor Mark Hatfield as a teenager at the 1960 Republican National Convention. He attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan, graduating in 1967. He continued his studies at the Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1968, he attended the National Prayer Breakfast, where he once again met Hatfield. Soon after, he joined the senator’s staff as an intern, and was made a full-time foreign policy advisor in 1969. In the late 1970s, he and Karen Granberg were married, and both changed their surnames to Granberg-Michaelson. He left Hatfield’s staff in 1976 to become managing editor of the social justice magazine Sojourners, a position he held until 1980. He was also general secretary for the Reformed Church in America.
