Biography

Roger Edward Martin was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1935. He attended Catholic schools in Portland, and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1957. He met Janet Duffy while at the university, and they married in 1958; they later had three children. Martin served in the U.S. Army for six months in 1957, and continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1963. He worked for the family business, Martin Electronics. He was a Republican politician and represented Clackamas County in the Oregon House of Representatives from 1967 to 1978, serving as minority leader from 1975 to 1978. He ran for Oregon governor in 1978, but lost the Republican primary to Vic Atiyeh. In 1979, he and Janet Duffy divorced. Soon afterward, he and Margaret Jane were married. (Margaret Jane’s surname before marriage is unknown.) After leaving the Legislature, he was a lobbyist for multiple organizations, including the Oregon Transportation Association and the Oregon Library Association.
