Abstract

Pay records of the 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry regiment, including payrolls for companies and field staff, and individual soldiers' pay records. The 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry was raised during the Spanish-American War and served in the Philippines during that conflict and for the first four months of the subsequent Philippine-American War.

Abstract

Joseph G. Evans was a member of the Oregon Volunteer Infantry, 2nd Regiment, Company B, during the Spanish-American War. Papers consist of a typescript copy diary, June-July 1898, regarding his journey from San Francisco to the Philippines aboard the transport Australia; and typescript copy correspondence, May-August 1899, regarding his combat experiences.

Abstract

Newspaper clippings, photographs, and documents relating to William C. North and Domingo V. Ruiz. North lived in Portland, Oregon, and was a legislator and businessman. He and Ruiz met during the Spanish-American War, when North was serving in the 2nd Oregon Volunteer Regiment. Ruiz had been a member of the Spanish garrison, but following the surrender of Manila, Philippines, became friends with the men of the 2nd Oregon, and later became an American citizen.

Papers of Erastus A. Smith (1868-1950) relating to his military and religious careers, including certificates, letters of recommendation, and reminiscences. Smith was a Baptist minister from Oregon who preached at churches in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, and who served in the Oregon National Guard in the mid-1890s and in the 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Spanish-American War.
